I live in southern New Hampshire and can usually be found wandering throughout the state's mountains and forests.
New Hampshire’s Lakes Region is well-known for many reasons. Its scenic mountain vistas and lakeside views, family-friendly attractions, and rich history makes it a quintessential part of the state. With so many things to do and see, how do you decide on what to do for a day visit? If you’re thinking about some quality time outdoors followed by some fun time indoors, we’ve got you covered!
Start the day with a hike to scenic Mt. Major in Alton, one of the premier mountains in the Lakes Region.
While comparatively low is elevation at 1,787 ft., the open summit of Mt. Major offers spectacular views over Lake Winnipesaukee and out to the White Mountains. if you are an early riser, it's also perfect for sunrises!
Mt. Major's open summit ledges allow for lots of room to relax and take in the expansive views.
Most of the mountain lies within the Society For The Protection Of New Hampshire Forest's Mt. Major Reservation. Three main hiking routes lead to the top in about 1.5 miles and 1,150 ft. of climbing.

In windy weather, hikers can seek shelter within the foundation of Mr. Phippen's Hut.
This stone structure at the summit of Mt. Major dates back to 1925. It was built as a hiker shelter by Mr. George Phippen, who was the owner of the top of Mt. Major at the time.
Funspot was created in 1952 by Bob Lawton, who still shows up for work every day! It provides quality entertainment in a family-friendly atmosphere and has stayed true to its original mission.
