Winter in New Hampshire is absolutely gorgeous. Whether there’s snow on the ground or just a chill in the air, there’s something refreshing about getting outside this time of year. This natural wonder is located very close to all of the fun activities in North Conway, that being said the parking lot can fill up quickly. In the winter the traffic dies down a bit and we have never had a problem finding a spot. The parking lot is however dirt and in the early spring if there has been a lot of rain the parking lot tends to have large ruts and potholes. So during a particularly rainy season, it may be a good idea to bring a high-clearance vehicle. Other than that, pay the small day-use fee and take off into the woods for a wild and wonderful adventure.
Throughout the year the falls are simple to find and beautiful. In the summer you'll find visitors splashing in the cool water and in the fall the entire area takes on a golden glow surrounded by foliage.

But in the winter things here get extra special.

The hike getting to the waterfalls is a simple and easy-to-follow path, however, you are in the White Mountains and there tends to be a lot of snow. In our experience, the trail has become very slippery with ice, so a good pair of microspikes will solve that issue and make the whole trip alot more enjoyable. Be sure to look back when you get to the falls because you should be able to see some lovely views of the mountains without the leaves on the trees.
And at just over a mile for the out-and-back trip, it's not terribly hard on the legs.

The whole hike is incredibly peaceful. All is quiet in the forest apart from the singing birds and the crunch of your boots on the path.

While warmer months see a rushing roar of water that you can hear shortly into the hike, the winter offers a different sort of beauty. The water still falls, but it's covered in snow and ice.

While you definitely won't want to swim in these conditions, you'll probably want to spend some time enjoying the peace and quiet.

The trail doesn't just stop at the falls either. Follow along the rocks and you can get several views of the cascading water. This is especially fun with little kids when you get to explore and see the waterfalls up close.

This is a great outing for the days following a snowstorm. Or, just after some frigid weather. Just be sure to dress warmly. If it's cold enough to freeze a waterfall there's a good chance you'll want some gloves!
