If you love being outside, there’s no better place to be than the glorious Granite State. From walks to hikes to strolls along the shore, there are plenty of ways to clear our heads with some fresh air. And while we love the simple routes, it’s fun to take on a challenge sometimes. This hike is a great one if you’re looking for your own challenge.
The Mount Morgan and Mount Percival Loop trail in Center Sandwich offers incredible views of Squam and Winnipesaukee Lakes. But, you'll have to work to reach them! Luckily all that work comes with some fun (though challenging!) elements along the way.
The 5.2-mile loop can be accessed by starting at the trailhead off of Squam Lake Road. It's best to arrive early if it's a nice day to ensure you get a spot. Things can get busy later in the day.
The first portion of the trail begins relatively flatly. The trail has some rocks and roots, so be sure to watch your footing. Slowly the trail heads upwards and soon you'll have a fun choice to make!
You can either head to the summit by going through the caves or by tackling the ladders. Both are fun, but the decision will surely be based on whether or not you're more afraid of heights or small spaces. And, if you'd like to avoid both there's a different trail that leads around.
The ladders can feel unsteady so take it nice and slow. Eventually you'll have the chance to get through a small cave where the first views will be spread out before you.
Once you've taken in both summits, you'll make your way down Mount Percival. While considered the easier of the two to descend, you'll still want to make sure you have steady footing. Eventually, you'll get back to flatter ground where you'll make your way back to the trailhead.
This hike is not great for beginners, but it's not impossible. If you're sure to wear strong footwear, dress for any weather and take your time this is a great option for someone trying to challenge themselves. Prepare to spend about four hours on this journey. It will be time well-spent!
The Mount Morgan and Percival Loop Trail is said to be best between April and October, but it’s open year-round. You can learn more about it and see a full map by visiting alltrails.com. And if you have a furry friend they can come along, just be sure to keep them on a leash.
