As we search for more ways to enjoy the outdoors and also explore new corners of the region, we’re loving this small town on the border of New Hampshire and Maine. It offers everything we love, from road trips to lakes to rivers to hiking trails. Best of all, it’s the perfect time of year for planning outdoor-centric adventures!
The small town of Errol is located in Coos County, directly on the Maine border.
Its location directly on Umbagog Lake means there's plenty of access to fun outdoor adventures. Whether you enjoy calm walks or more exciting river trips, you'll find something for just about everyone.
First up is exploring Umbagog Lake State Park where you'll find plenty of trails. But this is also a great place for water activities like kayaking and canoeing. In fact, many people choose this as their base for multi-day trip on the water. You'll find camping sites that can only be reached by paddle!
Once you've explored for the afternoon, you can choose to head home. BUT, if you're up for a weekend of fun book yourself a room at a local Bed and Breakfast. We've read that Peace of Heaven is lovely where you can find a comfy bed and a delicious home-cooked breakfast.
There's enough to do at Umbagog Lake State Park to visit when you wake up. This time you might want to explore the National Wildlife Refuge for bird watching. You have the chance to see birds like osprey, loon, great blue heron and even bald eagles!
For those who prefer their explorations to be indoors, a must-visit is L.L. Cote. This beloved Errol retailer has a fan-favorite albino moose you can see which is worth the trip on its own!
This area is also great for white water and you'll find a great way to have an adventure by visiting Northern Waters Outfitters! They offer full-day and partial-day adventures that will bring you out on the water for lots of different trips.
Errol is a lovely place to visit if you love the outdoors, but it's also got character all its own. Be sure to spend some time in town by getting a cup of coffee or snacks for your drive home.
