In 1858 a man named Moses Cudworth opened a hotel on the side of the mountain called "Halfway House" because it was roughly halfway between the base and the summit. The hotel was wildly popular in its day, accommodating up to 100 guests and 75 horses. Sadly, the hotel burned down in 1954 and little remains of the structure.

The transcendentalist writers Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and Margaret Fuller all visited the mountain during their lives and wrote fondly of its natural beauty and serenity. In fact, "Monadnoc" is one of Emerson's most famous poems to this day.
