As local travel experts, we know what travelers are looking for when it comes to finding the perfect accommodations for their next trip. To compile our lists, we scour the internet to find properties with excellent ratings and reviews, desirable amenities, nearby attractions, and that something special that makes a destination worthy of traveling for.
Were you the type of kid who dreamed of being a train conductor? If you were, we’ve got good news for you. You can live out your train fantasy by spending the night at a real bunkhouse at one of the most historic train stations in Nevada. This is definitely one of the most unique places you can spend the night. Nothing is as thrilling as sleeping in a century-old cabin just feet away from real, working trains. Check it out.
Have you ever wanted to spend the night at a museum? You can do just that at the Nevada Northern Railway Museum. However, this place is much more than a museum. It's a historic landmark. The train station looks almost to be frozen in time.
You have a couple of options if you decide to spend the night at the railway. The first option is to sleep in a real, working caboose. This specific caboose was delivered to the station over four decades ago, and now you can spend the night in it.
If you choose to sleep in the caboose, be aware that this option is very similar to sleeping in an RV or something of that sort. It contains just the basics, like bedding. There is no electricity or air conditioning and you have to go to the bunkhouse for running water, showers, and restrooms.
The second option is a little more cozy than the caboose. Spend the night in this authentic bunkhouse which has been renovated to suit any visitor's needs.
The bunkhouse doesn't actually contain any bunk-beds anymore. Guests of the bunkhouse will have their own room with either a queen or twin sized bed, along with access to a shared kitchen and bathroom.
The bunkhouse can accommodate up to six people. Unlike the caboose, the small lodge contains all of the typical modern conveniences including electricity, heat, air conditioning, etc. There's even a sitting area where you can relax and take in the atmosphere of this unique place.
Back in the day, the bunkhouse was constructed to entice workers to come work for the railroad. East Ely has always been a remote area, so the railway provided workers with lodging to make working here desirable.
The bunkhouse is located in the middle of the yard and is currently used by volunteers of the railroad. This place gets booked up quickly, so reservations made in advance is always advised.
Evenings at the station are always cool and clear. The rail yard can get to be so quiet that all you hear is the distant hooting of an owl and other sounds of nearby wildlife.
You'll probably be awakened by the typical sounds of the steam engine trains getting ready for the day. This means it's time to wake up and start exploring the historic gem that is the Nevada Northern Railway. For more information about this one-of-a-kind lodging option, you can visit their website
