Located in the Lahontan Valley of north-central Nevada sixty miles east of Reno, and five miles east of Fallon. The preserve was established in 1948 to provide a habitat for migratory birds. The Refuge consists of salt desert scrub uplands and shallow freshwater and saltwater marshes.
The 80-thousand-acre refuge is designated by the National Audubon Society as an Important Bird Area. The site is also recognized as a site of hemispheric importance by the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network. The local Paiute tribe, known as the Toi-Ticutta or cattail eaters, have used the marsh for thousands of years.
The rich and diverse wetlands in the Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge attract more than a quarter million waterfowl, hundreds of thousands of shorebirds, and over 20,000 other water birds on their migratory routes each year.
