One of the best things about living in Nevada is getting to experience the state’s wide variety of landscapes. Sure, we may be mostly known for our deserts, but it feels like there’s something new to discover around every corner. You could live in the Battle Born State for decades and still not discover it all! For instance, one of Nevada’s most underrated destinations is White Owl Canyon. This canyon may be one of the lesser-known spots in our state, but it contains some of the most spectacular scenery—including jaw-dropping slot canyons that you can walk through yourself. Exploring it is a must for any adventurer so read on to learn all about it.
If you're up for an adventure filled with mesmerizing slot canyons and stunning desert scenery, then look no further than the hidden White Owl Canyon in Lake Mead National Recreation Area.
White Owl Canyon is a real "locals only" type of gem, located right along the edge of Lake Mead near Boulder City. It boasts a short but moderate 3.6-mile loop trail that takes you right through the heart of the canyon, and it makes for a memorable outing.
If you're wondering about the name, you'll be interested to know that White Owl Canyon was named for the many white owls (sometimes just called "barn owls") that call the canyon home. Be on the lookout for nests, poop, pellets, and actual owls during your time here.
To get to the trailhead, you'll head straight to Lake Mead National Recreation Area. From the Las Vegas Wash entrance, you'll drive east and then south to 33 Hole Road. Here, you'll turn left and continue on the access road towards the lake.
Once at the end of 33 Hole Road, you'll arrive at a parking lot where you'll find the trailhead. The start of the trail leads you across a dry lake bed and completely immerses you in the unending desert scenery, but it isn't long before you come across the canyon itself.
Once you've entered White Owl Canyon, you'll find yourself completely surrounded by the slot canyon's high vertical walls. Their rugged yet beautiful appearance is like something from a different planet, and you'll likely find yourself craning your neck to see how high they go.
If it's wildlife you're here to see, then you'll definitely want to keep an eye out for "white wash"—aka barn owl poop—on the canyon walls. White wash is a good signifier for finding owl nests in the canyon overhang, and seeing one is definitely exciting.
White Owl Canyon is definitely one of the Silver State's best-kept secrets. Spend the day exploring slot canyons at this little-known destination for an adventure that's bound to leave you in awe!
