Genoa is most widely recognized as being the first settlement in Nevada. The town certainly contains a unique and rich history, which is still very prevalent to the community today. However, with a population of just around 930 people, it seems that Genoa is also one of Nevada’s greatest hidden gems. This quaint little town has a lot going for it, and could easily be considered the best place in the Silver State for a peaceful getaway. Here’s why.
This historic town had an important part in Nevada's history back in the day. However, it remains a blissful place to live and play today. With a population of just a few hundred in the town (and less than 1,000 when including the surrounding region), Genoa has got to be one of Nevada's most underrated towns.
The area was settled when a man named John Reese, along with other men, set up a trading post in the area. The trading post attracted settlers to the area to live permanently. Genoa's history is far from forgotten. In fact, the town thrives off of it. One of the town's main attractions is Mormon Station Memorial State Park, which commemorates the initial settling of Genoa by Mormon traders.

The district was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. Commonly referred to as "Mormon Station", the district is made up of several Victorian-style structures, including the town's original courthouse.

The main strip of the town is full of quaint shops and great little eateries. Strolling through the town, you'll feel transported to a different time.

Winters are known to vary depending on the year in Genoa. It can either be very wet or very dry, along with freezing temperatures. However, it's not uncommon for the town to get several feet of snow. The town becomes even more enchanting when it's all covered in snow and lit up with holiday lights.
The town is home to an abundance of wildlife including deer, foxes, snakes, black bears, and several species of birds. It's not unusual to spot some of these creatures close to the town. Since the town is nestled right at the base of the Sierra Nevadas and located just a half hour from Lake Tahoe, opportunities for recreational activities like hiking and fishing are endless.
