Denio is the type of town that you could go your whole life without even knowing it's there. Tucked away in northern Nevada, right on the edge of the border with Oregon, Denio is one of the teensiest little towns you've ever seen. However, it's heaven on earth for adventurous souls and you're about to see why.
Home to just 47 people, Denio was originally settled in 1885 and has stayed pretty quiet ever since. This is the type of place you go when you feel like escaping civilization. The small community may not contain much, but it's located in a region that is just begging to be explored.
Services are limited in Denio so be sure to come prepared. The town is as quaint as they come, home to just a post office, tiny library, community center, and a single bar that serves as the local gathering spot. However, it's what's around Denio that makes this region worth a visit.
Outside of town, the opportunities for outdoor recreation are truly endless. Full of canyons, ranges, and valleys, the landscape is pristine. In fact, located adjacent to town is the wonderful Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge which every wildlife enthusiast should visit at some point.
Are you the type of person that likes to indulge in our state's natural hot springs? You're in luck. Denio is home to MANY hot springs, including the downright heavenly Bog Hot Springs. Surrounded by sage plains and wide expanses of rural landscape, this might just be the most relaxing place to take a soak.
In fact, you could spend all day perusing the region's various hot springs. Virgin Valley Warm Springs is also located nearby. The warm little pond boasts clear emerald waters in a picturesque setting. There may not be a five-star hotel located in this region, but the Virgin Valley Campground is a great option for explorers (and it's free).
Looking to do something a little different? Pay a visit to Rainbow Ridge Opal Mine which offers up some of the most amazing rock hounding in the state. In fact, this mine is home to some of the rarest gemstones in North America—black fire opals—and you'll want to get your hands on some.
On your way out of town be sure to stop by Denio Junction, located right at State Route 140 and 292. Here you can fuel up and grab something to eat (they've got a great cheeseburger and Bloody Mary) before being on your way. Denio represents a slice of Nevada that is rarely explored so the next time you're in the mood for an adventure, be sure to pay it a visit!
