8 Destinations Way Up North In Nevada That Are So Worth The Drive

When it comes to highly-praised tourist attractions, the southern region of our state gets most of the attention. However, there is just as much to explore in the northern section. These destinations prove it! There are way more places to check out in Northern Nevada than listed here, but this is a pretty good start. Explore a side of the Silver State that a lot of people aren’t even aware exists. Check out this list and start planning a road trip ASAP.

Located in the far northwest region of the state, the Black Rock Desert boasts vast swaths of barren, yet strangely beautiful, land. The flat ground extends for over 400-square-miles and it's hard to believe this area of the state was once covered in a huge area of water known as Lake Lahontan. The Black Rock Desert, home to the famous annual Burning Man event, is a must-see for any adventurous spirit.

Nevada is loaded with cool ghost towns, but one of the most unique by far is Unionville. This wonderfully historic community is home to just 20 or so people today, technically making it a living ghost town. However, the remote location and the abundance of historic structures makes this little hamlet feel far removed from the rest of the world.

Boasting more than half a million acres of pristine high desert habitat, this wildlife refuge feels like a vast oasis. The region is primarily home to large wintering herds of pronghorn antelope. However, all different kinds of wildlife thrive here. This place is an excellent example of Northern Nevada's "untouched" aspect, and every nature lover should see it.

Located within the stunning Ruby Mountains, Lamoille Canyon is a wild and scenic recreation area that never disappoints. Drive through it via the 12-mile Lamoille Canyon Scenic Byway for a short but memorable adventure, or spend an entire weekend exploring the peaks, trails, and alpine lakes that this blissful region has to offer. This is an adventure destination that must be seen to be believed.

Considered the largest sand dune field in the state, these dunes are just begging for a visit. Although most of these dunes aren't any higher than 100-feet, the sheer amount of them is bound to blow you away.

Nestled on the side of Interstate 80 is the quirky and close-knit community of Lovelock. Although the town is named after a man, George Lovelock, the town has really taken its name to heart. Basically, this little town loves love! Check out Lover's Lock Plaza, the historic depot, the beloved Cowpoke Cafe, and the epic Lovelock Cave for a day full of small-town charm and adventure.

Hiding out in the town of Elko, the Western Folklife Center is the perfect place to stop in "Cowboy Country". Located within the historic Pioneer Hotel, the center is dedicated to preserving the rich culture and lively spirit of the American West. It's host to the annual National Cowboy Poetry Gathering and a myriad of year-round entertainment, activities, concerts, readings, and more.
