If you’re a longtime Nevadan, you’ve probably experienced all of our state parks several times over. Don’t get us wrong. These parks will never get old, but we couldn’t be more excited to check out the Silver State’s newest state park! Walker River State Recreation Area officially opened up to the public just a few days ago. That means you need to make it your personal mission to see it for yourself ASAP. This little slice of heaven contains an abundance of natural beauty and it’s an outdoorsman’s dream. Take a look at Nevada’s new state park below. Are you excited to explore this place for yourself?
Comprised of 12,000 acres and 28 miles of property, Walker River State Recreation Area is Nevada's brand new state park. Astonishingly, it's the first time the area has been open to the public in over 100 years.
You'll find the park located just 13 miles outside of Yerington. It's here that you'll find three century-old ranching properties including Rafter 7, Flying M, and Pitchfork Ranch located along the river. Currently, the only areas open for exploration are Pitchfork Ranch and the Elbow at Nine Mile. However, additional units are expected to open to the public in the future.
A lot of work went into making this park suitable for the public and it was all made possible by the Walker Basin Conservancy. Both primitive and full-hookup campgrounds were created near Pitchfork Ranch. In the future, the park would like to emphasize equestrian and off-road vehicle trails, water sports, fishing, kayaking, and a lot more. We can definitely see this becoming a recreational haven in the south Mason Valley.
The park's landscape is beautifully rugged and runs along a whopping 28 miles of the gorgeous East Walker River. It's hard to believe such a breathtaking area was closed to the public for so long!
A southwestern-style building on the property acts as the park's Visitor Center. Here you can check out the colorful history of the Walker River State Recreation Area, an area that's been a mystery to many of us for so long.
The new park definitely looks like an amazing spot to spend the day and immerse yourself in the beauty of Nevada's natural landscapes. A day-use area is available near the river and makes for a great spot to picnic at. Although the park is just miles outside of town, the region feels incredibly wild and untouched.
The arrival of this new state park is incredibly exciting. After all, it's not every day we get to celebrate a new park! It's safe to say that we can't wait to make it over to the park and check it out for ourselves. However, we're even more excited to see all of the great things to come in the future at Walker River State Recreation Area.
