Located near Reno is the Hole in the Wall Trail, a stunning 5.3-mile, moderately trafficked, moderately difficult, out-and-back trail that features a river and an interesting man made wonder. As the name implies, there is a hole in the canyon wall which is quite the sight as water flows through the tunnel into Steamboat Ditch. This trail is perfect for hikers and mountain bikers and offers stunning, panoramic views of the mountains and Reno. Take a look.
The trail begins in Mayberry Park, just outside of Reno.
The bridge marks the beginning of the Tom Cooke Trail. After the ridge, you turn right onto Steamboat Ditch Trail.
The beginning of the hike is quite hilly; however, once over the ridge, the terrain levels out quite nicely.
In addition to the actual hole in the wall, along the trail is a historic concrete "airmail arrow" used to help guide pilots to landing areas.
The trail follows the Truckee River. If the day is hot, you can take a dip in the river.
In 1878, Chinese laborers were hard at work digging the 37-mile long Steamboat Ditch with picks, shovels, and horse-drawn plows so water could be brought from the eastern Sierra Nevadas to the Truckee Meadow.
The tunnel was painstakingly cut into the rock to avoid having to transport water around the mountain.
This hole makes one wonder about a portal to another world, or perhaps an entrance to a labyrinth of underground caves.
Make sure to bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and wear good trail shoes. Dogs are welcome, but should be kept on a leash, and please clean up after them.
