The region surrounding Lake Tahoe is chock full of spectacular hiking trails, but there's only one that leads you straight to an iconic monkey-shaped rock! The hike to Monkey Rock is a unique one for sure, and it's also one of the best places to view the lake.
The hike to Monkey Rock is more formally known as the Tunnel Creek Trail. It's a 4.7-mile out-and-back trail located near Incline Village. Known for its breathtaking views of the lake, this trail is an excellent way to experience Tahoe's unending beauty.
You'll find the trailhead on the east side of town, right by the Tunnel Creek Cafe. You'll start the trail on a paved road but that will soon give way to a dirt hiking trail that leads you past a Forest Service gate and up the mountain.
The trek to Monkey Rock is surprisingly easy. With a total elevation gain of just 500-feet, it's a manageable adventure for both casual and hardcore outdoor enthusiasts. The trail is open to both hikers and cyclists, and it's also considered dog-friendly.
It isn't long after taking off on the trail that you can spot the one and only Monkey Rock. After all, it's certainly hard to miss. This unique rock formation really does resemble a monkey's head and it makes for an awesome photo op destination.
Legend has it that the formation was originally discovered by a local, who then took it upon himself to carve the ears and nostrils into the "monkey head". Although we certainly don't advocate for damaging nature in any way, we have to admit that seeing Monkey Rock makes for a memorable experience.
Best of all, the view of Lake Tahoe is simply unparalleled. From here, you'll witness an outstanding view of the lake's massive 71-mile shoreline. It's easily the type of view you'll remember for a lifetime, so stop monkeying around and head on out to Monkey Rock to see it for yourself!
