The state’s very first meadery opened to the public last year, and it’s bringing the world’s oldest alcoholic beverage back in style. As the first craft mead brewery in Nevada, Black Rabbit Meads has the unique job of introducing the world's oldest form of alcohol to Nevadans in the 21st century. Even if you've never had a sip of mead in your life, this meadery is making this historic beverage both accessible and downright delicious.
Wondering what the heck mead is? Mead is alcohol that's made with honey and it can be brewed like wine, beer, or cider. Many brewers even opt to infuse their mead with fruits, herbs, or spices for something a little extra. Although mainly associated with the Vikings, mead was (and still is) enjoyed by cultures from all over the world.
Located in East Downtown Reno, Black Rabbit specializes in cider-style meads that are created with honey sourced from the Sierra Nevadas. Their meads are carbonated, semi-dry, gluten-free, and can best be described as a cross between beer and cider. It's also deliciously refreshing.
Nevada was actually the last state in the country to not have a meadery, but many Nevadans have been making mead for decades. Reno is actually home to several award-winning mead makers. Black Rabbit was actually opened by two of these "hobbyists" who insisted on making their passion their career as well.
Black Rabbit's taproom is located in a buzzing area of downtown Reno that's called the Brewery District. This area of town has been on the rise in recent years, and it's places like Black Rabbit that have been creating a sense of community in this thriving neighborhood.
Stop by the meadery and you'll have your choice between several unique meads. They offer a basic cider-style mead that's comprised of only honey, water, and yeast, along with several infused meads that boast flavors of pineapple, jalapeño, berries, and hops. Their selection is always changing, so drop by and see what's new!
Whether you're a craft beer lover looking to try something new or somebody who's trying to unleash their inner Viking, a visit to Black Rabbit Mead Co. will transform your taste buds. Check them out and treat yourself to the world's oldest alcoholic beverage—Nevada style!
