There's a Little Italy right here in Nevada that few people know about, but you'll definitely want to explore it. Located in a historic neighborhood in Reno, this region of The Biggest Little City In The World is home to endless history and amazing cuisine.
It turns out that Reno is home to a very significant Italian-American community. Italian immigrants migrated to the Truckee Meadows during the 1860s, in search of a climate that more closely resembled their home country than the East Coast had to offer. The dry and mountainous terrain of Northern Nevada just happened to replicate the atmosphere of many provinces of northern Italy.
As a result, three distinct Italian-American neighborhoods were created. One can be found in Sparks, and the other two in Reno—one along Washington Street and and the other along the Truckee River just west of downtown.
One major characteristic of these neighborhoods are the Craftsman-Style homes, many of which you can still see today. One neighborhood, known as the Powning Addition, is especially notable for its historic properties and their value to the Italian-American community.
One thing is for sure, Reno would look a lot different if it weren't for the Italian community that helped build it into the bustling city that it is today. However, along with the Italian community's historical impact, they also brought the town something else: authentic Italian cuisine!
