Considered America’s first national recreation area, Lake Mead NRA is the source of all types of outdoor adventures. Consisting of 1.5 million acres of pristine desert beauty, visitors can swim, boat, hike, cycle, camp, and fish to their heart’s extent at this spectacular paradise. Loaded with hiking trails, it seems like there’s always something waiting to be explored at Lake Mead. One hike that every Nevadan should check out is the Liberty Bell Arch Trail. Although it’s technically located in Arizona, the incredible wonders you’ll uncover on this trail are well worth hopping over state lines for a few hours!
The trail to Liberty Bell Arch is one of the most popular in Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Leading you up and over hills, through canyons, past historic relics, and straight to a giant free-standing arch, we can definitely see the appeal of a trail like this!
The trail is located in a very accessible region of the park that's just south of Hoover Dam and right along Highway 93. From Las Vegas, it's about a 45-minute drive to Lake Mead NRA, into Arizona, and to the White Rock Canyon Trailhead.
The hike is rated as moderate and stretches for just over five miles. Throughout the hike, you'll traverse about 900-feet of elevation gain. You may work up a sweat but rest assured it's worth it! The views of the desert scenery, Colorado River, and Liberty Arch are a must-see.
Do keep in mind that due to extreme temperatures, the trail is off-limits during the heat of summer. This one is best accomplished during winter or spring and, of course, always bring plenty of water and dress for the weather. Otherwise, this is a pretty pleasant hike that takes advantage of old roads and wide-open, easy-to-follow trails.
Winding along the White Rock Wash, the trail takes you through a diverse and fascinating landscape. You'll find yourself passing through narrows, past an old magnesium mine site, and along ridges that boast sweeping views of the river gorge below.
Of course, the highlight of this trail is the Liberty Bell Arch! Named for its resemblance to the famous Liberty Bell, this towering arch is the product of millions of years worth of geologic erosion. It's an amazing natural wonder that doesn't disappoint when you see it with your own eyes.
When exploring Lake Mead, make an effort to seek out the Liberty Bell Arch. Seeing the arch is a wonderful experience, but finding it is an adventure you won't forget.
