Here in Nevada, we’re not afraid to indulge in some down-and-dirty desert fun. Our state is home to a few fantastic dry lake beds that all boast an abundance of recreational activities. However, Jean Dry Lake may be the most picturesque of them all. This dried-up lake bed in the middle of nowhere boasts a barren type of beauty that has made it a popular place for photoshoots and off-roaders. When you feel the need to let loose in the desert, consider a trip to this awe-inspiring destination.
Boasting hundreds of miles of trails for adventurers to explore, the Jean and Roach Dry Lake Area is a popular destination for off-highway vehicle enthusiasts. However, you'll find that it's worth visiting for the spectacular desert scenery alone.
You'll find the area just east of the town of Jean. It's comprised of both the dry, barren lake beds of Jean and Roach Lake. From Las Vegas, you can find it by taking I-15 south to the Sloan Road Exit and turning left. Go under the overpass and turn right at the stop sign. Then turn left at the Four Star Aggregates sign and proceed to the area.
Jean Dry Lake is the highlight of this incredible landscape. It's considered an endorheic dry lake which means that any water it received via rainfall does not flow out of it like other bodies of water. Instead, the lake bed experiences water loss from evaporation and seepage.
Although it's dry most of the time, the lake bed actually has the potential to flood after substantial rainfall. The area is capable of holding up to several feet of water. For this reason, travel on the lakebed is not recommended after a serious rainfall.
As you can imagine, the wide open expanses are a dream for off-roading enthusiasts of all skill levels. There are also trails to the north and east of the lake bed lead that can lead riders throughout the surroundings hills.
Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, camping is also available at this breathtaking area. However, be aware that the landscape is rugged and there are no services out here. It's highly recommended you travel with a group and bring plenty of food, water, and supplies.
After you're done exploring Jean and Roach Lake's desolate beauty, be sure to stop by the nearby art installation Seven Magic Mountains. Located north of the lake beds along Las Vegas Boulevard, this bizarre attraction serves as the perfect ending to your desert adventure!
