Calling all history enthusiasts! The story of how our state was created is a fascinating one, and it’s a story that every Nevadan should know at some point. Visit this historic fort and you’ll be able to learn about a small but important piece of the Silver State’s early history. Believe it or not, this fort represents what would eventually become the booming metropolis of Las Vegas. Seeing this historic spot is an awe-inspiring experience that will take you on a journey back in time, and it’s a destination that everybody should see at least once.
It's hard to imagine the lively city of Las Vegas starting out as nothing but a small settlement, but you can see for yourself when you visit the Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort. This historic destination will show you a small slice of our state's past, and it's absolutely fascinating.
Considered the first permanent, non-native settlement in the Las Vegas Valley, this historic destination features both the actual remains of the old adobe fort along with some recreated aspects. Although located in what is now downtown Las Vegas, visiting this place feels like traveling back in time.
The park tells the story of the Mormon missionaries who arrived in the valley on June 14, 1855. They selected this site to build their fort since the nearby creek was the only source of flowing water for miles.
The fort served as a way station for travelers. The Mormons eventually abandoned the fort at the beginning of the Utah War just a few years after it was built, but the fort itself would be occupied by a variety of settlers up until the late 19th century.
The city of Las Vegas didn't officially acquire the fort until 1989, and a renovation of the historic site occurred only in 2005. However, the wait was definitely worth it. Today, the Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort is an inspiring destination chock full of history.
While the fort itself is meant to resemble what it actually looked like when it was first built, the Visitor Center contains a multitude of exhibits and photos which tell the story of this incredible destination. Walking through the park, you can't help but imagine how different Las Vegas may look if this fort never existed.
A visit to this historic fort doesn't just tell you about one of our state's earliest settlements. It shows you. Experience a piece of living Nevada history and make it your mission to see this place for yourself.
Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort State Historic Park is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Address: 500 E Washington Ave, Las Vegas, NV 89101.
