One of the greatest secrets that Nevadans like to keep is the fact that Nevada is much more than desert. We even have the mountains and forests to prove it! This hike leads you through some of the most amazing mountain scenery, but the best part? You end up with the perfect view of a hidden waterfall. This waterfall hike would make for the perfect adventure the next time you find yourself needing some peace and quiet among nature. Have you made this amazing trek before?
Are you ready for an adventure that is sure to blow you away? Your journey starts at the bottom of Kyle Canyon in the Mt. Charleston Wilderness. This is where you'll find the trailhead for the Mary Jane Falls Trail.
The trail is in good shape and well-marked. It starts off nice and easy but slowly picks up elevation along the way. It's by no means overly strenuous, but you'll definitely get a good leg work-out in.
The trail immerses you in a beautiful mountain environment. As you get deeper and deeper along the trail you'll be led through ponderosa pines, aspens, white firs, and plenty of other types of foliage.
In total, the trail is pretty short at only 2.5 miles out-and-back. It isn't long until you come upon the very thing for which the trail is named: Mary Jane Falls. It's definitely not your typical waterfall. It looks to be a small, steady trickle down a limestone wall.
The best time to see this quaint waterfall is during spring, since that is when water flow is the heaviest. It may not be one of those rapidly flowing waterfalls, but there's something undeniably magical about this hidden mountain waterfall.
Depending on when you make the hike, you may even see the waterfall when it's still frozen. The frozen falls is a spectacular sight that is truly unforgettable.
But wait. That's not all! At the base of the falls you'll find two amazing mountain caves. The cave that is closest to the falls is aptly named Mary Jane Cave and makes for a great spot to stop and rest before making your descent back into the canyon.
Inside the cave you'll be treated to some truly awesome views of the forest and mountains. Be sure to use caution when exploring the cave and leave everything just as you found it.
To get to the trailhead, take U.S. Highway 95 to State Route 157. Then you'll travel 2 miles to the ranger station along Echo Road. Here you'll turn left and find the trailhead at the road's end.
