This place, referred to as Guru Road, is totally bizarre in the best way possible and it’s well-worth a visit when you find yourself in the area.
The tiny town of Gerlach lies just south of the Black Rock Desert in northern Nevada. The community is located quite literally in the middle of nowhere. Despite its desolate location, you'll find that this region definitely has some eccentricities—including the famous Guru Road.
It's hard to classify exactly what Guru Road is The place is part monument, part road art, and part desert oddity. One thing's for sure about this place, though. It's downright weird.
Also known as Guru Drive, this mile-long strip of dirt can be found about two miles north of Gerlach. The entrance is marked by a street sign that says "Guru Rd." along with some bizarre messages etched upon some flat rocks, like "The Wonder Road" and "Maybe Something For You".
What you'll find here is hard to describe in words. It appears to be a mixture of junk-like and natural materials. Together they form some truly wacky "sculptures" that are unlike anything you've seen before. The area contains several large installations that are so worth getting out of the car and looking at.
How did a quirky place like this come to be? It turns out a man named DeWayne "Doobie" Williams is responsible for these desert-style art installations. He created them during the last 15 years of his life, sometime in the 1980s and 1990s.
Doobie used local stones and other found objects to create these incredible, if not weird, sculptures. Many of them are considered to be tributes to family, friends, and other local residents. Today, Guru Road is considered a prominent part of Gerlach's character.
The town of Gerlach is small and quiet, but thousands of people pass through it every year on their way to the annual Burning Man festivities. If you're a "burner" and have yet to see this place with your own eyes, then you'll definitely want to put it on the list for next time.
