Eureka is a modest and charming little town in central Nevada. Our state is full of old mining towns with histories just like Eureka's, so what makes this place different? Well, this town is considered one of the best examples of a preserved mining town in the entire West.
It's not just the history that will "wow" you. Eureka is a true small town with a population of roughly 600 people. It's the type of community where everyone knows everyone and they welcome visitors with open arms. Even if you've never been here before, you'll feel right at home.
The town was settled back in 1864 by silver prospectors who discovered silver ore on Prospector Peak. According to legend, the town got its quirky name when a prospector yelled "Eureka!" upon discovering silver deposits.
It's nice and quiet here which makes for a peaceful day trip. It's hard to believe this town was once home to more than 10,000 people. Although the people are long-gone, buildings from Eureka's heyday still stand tall. The recently restored Opera House is one of the must-see buildings while you're in Eureka.
If you'd like an up-close look at the town's history, be sure to visit the Eureka Sentinel Museum. This building was home to the town's newspaper from 1879 until 1960 and contains some fascinating artifacts from the town's past.
The museum contains original items including printing equipment, mining tools, ledgers, personal items of miners, and lots more. It contains plenty of information about Eureka's newspaper, but it also provides valuable insight into what daily life looked like in this extraordinary mining town.
A visit to a small town isn't complete until you've stopped by the locals' favorite place to eat. Pony Express Meats and Deli may not look like much from the outside, but they are the place in town for homestyle cooking, sandwiches, or a cup of coffee.
