There’s definitely no shortage of historic sites here in the Silver State and they are all equally worthy of exploring. However, there’s one destination that few people seem to know about despite the fact that it lets you take home 500-million-year-old fossils. At this unique park near Caliente you can dig for your own fossils and even keep them for yourself. Rockhounds and history enthusiasts will be utterly mesmerized with this incredible park. Grab your rock pick and chip away! This fossil park is begging for a visit.
The Oak Springs Trilobite Area is a little-known fossil park located just 12 miles from Caliente. This region of BLM land can be found off of Highway US-93 and it's more than worthy of a visit, especially for fossil enthusiasts.
In the park you'll find an accessible trail that takes you around the fossil sites, a parking lot, picnic area, and some trail maps which include information about the area and the fossils. This region may be remote but you'll also notice just how tranquil and beautiful the landscape is.
As you traverse Oak Spring's main hiking trail, you'll come across several large areas full of exposed shale. This is where you'll find the trilobite fossils. Feel free to dig and keep anything that you find. Oh, and remember to bring your own shovel and pick since there are none provided.
You're probably wondering what exactly a trilobite is. Trilobites are an extinct marine arthropod that died out 500-524 million years ago. They used to live in regions of shallow sea and this region is home to six distinct types.
It may take some time to come across a fossil worthy of taking home but it's so worth it. It's likely that you'll come across a bunch of individual pieces of trilobites, such as a separated head. However, with time and a dash of luck you may just come across an entire body.
There are no facilities at this site so be sure to come prepared. Bring snacks, water, and any gear you may need. Digging for fossils can be hard work but it's also a ton of fun.
Regardless of whether you find anything or not, the experience of digging for your own fossils in this little-known region of the desert is truly exhilirating. Try something different and plan a trip to Oak Springs Trilobite Area soon!
Fossils are allowed to be taken home by visitors in reasonable quantities. Just be aware that bartering or selling fossils is prohibited.
