Nevada is chock full of incredibly unique campgrounds but the one featured here might be one of the best. You can actually spend the night at this old historic Army fort and it’s downright amazing. Located near the town of Silver Springs is one of the most unique state parks Nevada has to offer. Fort Churchill State Historic Park is home to the remains of an old Army fort. It makes for a great day trip destination but few people realize you can actually camp here as well.
This place is just teeming with history. Here you can observe the remnants of an old Army station that was built back in 1861. The fort was originally built to provide protection for early settlers and the mail route along the Pony Express. However, the fort ended up playing an important role for storing supplies for the Union Army during the Civil War.
The fort had a short life. It was officially abandoned in 1869 and the empty buildings were sold at auction since the state of Nevada declined possession of the property.
Nothing was done with the buildings for decades after they had been sold. It wasn't until 1932 that the National Park Service and Civilian Conservation Corps worked together to build a visitor center and preserve the fort in a state of arrested decay.
Today, you can see the remains for yourself and imagine what a 19th century fort actually looked like. The park is also home to Buckland Station, a historic ranch that served as an important way station along the Central Overland Route. There's certainly no shortage of historic spots to peruse while you're here!
You might just find that there's too much in this park to see in just one day. Luckily, the park is home to a 20-site campground that is situated within a grove of cottonwood trees right along the Carson River.
Primitive camping can be found further along the river. Along with the park's historic sites, you'll find that the campground is surrounded by wonderful recreation opportunities. Bring a canoe for exploring the river, hike along one of the many hiking trails, or simply sit and relax while soaking up the beautiful desert scenery.
