Discover an oasis in the desert with the First Creek Canyon Trail in Nevada. Hiding inside of Red Rock Canyon, this little waterfall hike is a true hidden gem.
The 4-mile hike through the desert canyon is a pleasant adventure for hikers of all skill levels. The trail is classified as easy to moderate with only 377 feet in elevation, and it's considered one of the most popular treks in Red Rock Canyon.
The trailhead can be found along the park's main road, north of the turnoff for Spring Mountain Ranch State Park. The first mile of the trail is well-defined and easy to follow, leading you across the flat desert valley.
The trail becomes a lot less exposed and more vegetated as it enters the canyon. You'll soon find yourself within the shade of cottonwood, willow, and other regional trees.
The trail can be difficult to follow as it gets closer to the falls, so downloading the map ahead of time and/or bringing along a GPS is highly recommended. In fact, it's an unsigned spur trail that ends up leading you directly to the falls.
Although tricky to find, the sight of the waterfall is definitely worth the effort! Cascading into a pool below, the area feels like a shaded respite in the desert. Like many waterfalls in Red Rock Canyon, this waterfall is known to dry up, so plan to see it after a big rainfall if you want to see it at its best.
After reaching the waterfall, you can either head back or continue on the trail that takes you even further into First Creek Canyon. Check out the trail map here for more information on this gorgeous waterfall hike.
