Fall is a splendid time of year to be in Nevada. It’s during this season that many of our beautiful landscapes erupt with a vast array of brilliant fall colors. Seeing the fall foliage should be on every adventurer’s bucket list this year and we’ve got the perfect place for you to start: Lamoille Canyon. Often regarded as one of our state’s best-kept secrets, the canyon is a paradise for recreation enthusiasts. However, it also happens to be one of the most breathtaking fall landscapes that Nevada has to offer. Prepare to be blown away as you take in the sights, smells, and sounds of fall during this delightful fall foliage hike.
Often referred to as "The Swiss Alps of Nevada", the Ruby Mountains offer up breathtaking views and endless adventure. They make for an awesome destination to visit all year long but fall is by far one of the best times to see them due to the intense and vibrant fall foliage that occurs every year.
Spanning 80 miles, the Ruby Mountains are a big place to explore. However, a good place to start is always Lamoille Canyon. The canyon is home to several trails that boast the most spectacular views of mountains, valleys, lakes, and so much more.
You'll find a plethora of hiking trails to choose from when you arrive at the Lamoille Canyon Trailhead. The one we'll be featuring here is the shortest of them all— the Lamoille Lake Trail.
The trail takes you through the canyon and eventually leads you straight to Lamoille Lake. At just over 1.5 miles, the trail is short but it gains elevation quickly. However, the 800 feet of elevation doesn't seem so bad when you're surrounded by gorgeous fall colors like this!
The views of Lamoille Canyon from the trail are simply awe-inspiring. As the leaves begin to change color, the canyon lights up with shades of yellow, red, and orange. It seems almost too good to be true.
The views will only get better and better the higher you climb. The trail leads you through several switchbacks before eventually flattening out, rewarding you with great views of the canyon. Once the trail flattens out, you'll know you're almost to Lamoille Lake.
You'll pass by the smaller, lesser-known Dollar Lakes before finally arriving at Lamoille Lake. The small lake is surrounded by trees, brush, and looming mountains. There's even a path that cascades down to the delightful body of water so you can get up close to it. It is a popular fishing destination but you shouldn't have any problem finding a private portion of the lake for yourself.
