Here in Nevada, adventure seems to be in our blood. With so much to do and see, it’s hard not to fall in love with exploring our great outdoors. Even kids can get caught up in the glory of it all! There are plenty of kid-friendly adventures to be had in the Silver State, but you definitely don’t want to skip this quick and easy waterfall hike in Red Rock Canyon. At less than a mile long, you’ll probably spend more time hanging out at the waterfall than actually hiking. This is bound to be an experience that both kids and adults will remember for years to come.
Located within the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is a short trail that is perfect for young hikers. It's even called the "Children's Discovery Trail". The one-mile hike is geared towards educating children about the canyon and it even leads you to a delightful little waterfall.
The trail begins near the parking lot area. It's heavily signed and well-marked by stones so you shouldn't have any problem finding or following it. Be sure to pick up the trail brochure at the Visitor Center which contains a plethora of information regarding the different sites along the trail.
The desert scenery is vibrant and abundant here in Red Rock Canyon. Prickly pear cactus, looming red rocks, and even bighorn sheep can be spotted along the way to the waterfall. There's a reason this region is so popular among adventurers. It's because it's positively picturesque.
You'll find all sorts of neat prehistoric treasures along the trail which you can read all about in the handy-dandy brochure. For instance, the trail passes by a magnificent rock art site and even an old roasting pit that was used by Native Americans long ago.
This hiking trail is perfect for introducing Red Rock Canyon to little ones. Not only is this one of Nevada's most beautiful wonders, but it contains some fascinating history as well. This is truly a place that all Nevadans should visit at some point.
At some point, the Discovery Trail will branch off into the Lost Creek Falls trail which leads you directly to the waterfall. Seeing the waterfall can be hit or miss depending on the season. If you're lucky, you'll see it when it's flowing at full force. Otherwise, you might stumble upon a slow trickle of water. However, the falls are beautiful no matter what the flow is like!
Pro tip: try visiting right after a storm. That'll be your best bet for seeing the falls in all of its beauty. The waterfall is a spectacular sight, but it's the journey in its entirety that both young and old are sure to fall in love with.
