Located in Lyon County, Dayton came to be after Abner Blackburn discovered a gold nugget in a tributary of the Carson River in 1849. The town served as a commercial hub for miners and had a peak population of around 2,500 people. However, the turn of the century marked a downtown for Dayton, as the economy and population began to shrink.
Residents began to move away but the construction of the Lincoln Highway in the 1920s reinvigorated interest in the community. Today, Dayton is a well-known stop on the Loneliest Road in America, a.k.a. Nevada's U.S. Route 50.
