It may seem odd to think that the same state that’s renowned for having some of the most neon light in the world is also home to one of the darkest skies in the nation, but it’s true. Here in Nevada, we couldn’t be more proud of our dark skies. After all, there’s truly nothing better than looking up at the night sky to see trillions of stars sparkling back at you! There’s even one specific destination in our state that’s been recognized for its extremely dark sky, and you definitely need to experience it for yourself if you haven’t already. Everybody knows that Great Basin National Park is one of Nevada's greatest treasures, but did you know that it's actually considered one of the darkest places in the country? The preserve was given this wonderful designation back in 2016 by the International Dark Sky Assocation, and we think it's extremely well-deserved!

If you've ever been to Great Basin at nighttime, then you know exactly what they mean by "dark". This isn't just any dark sky. It's truly the closest thing to what the night sky might've looked like before electric light was invented. Looking up at it is an experience you won't easily forget.

It makes sense that Great Basin is so dark considering its super remote location. With a population of just 4,100, the town of Ely is the largest community within 100 miles of the preserve. Las Vegas is the closest major light source, and it's over 300 miles away.

However, destinations need more than just a dark sky to qualify for official designation by the Dark Sky Association. On top of dark skies, the park also needs to prove their commitment to reducing light pollution and preserving night vision. Great Basin has done just that.

In fact, the park was certified with gold-tier status, indicating the highest level of natural darkness. It just goes to show that when Nevadans do something, we do it right!

If you have yet to take advantage of one of Great Basin's many astronomy and stargazing programs, you'll want to do so ASAP. All in all, the park puts on over 100 programs a year that feature the preserve's dark skies, so there's no excuse not to go see this wonderful destination for yourself.
