If you’ve lived in Nevada for some time, you’ve likely stumbled upon all sorts of creepy spots. From old haunted saloons to clown-themed motels, our state is full of them. However, one of the creepiest has got to be the notorious cemetery located in the living ghost town of Goldfield. This is the type of graveyard that looks like it could the filming location in a scary movie. However, a spooky atmosphere isn’t all that this place contains. Goldfield Cemetery is chock full of unique regional history and you’ll definitely want to experience it for yourself—just don’t go alone.
Nothing gives you the heebie-jeebies more than walking around an old cemetery, especially if it's the Goldfield Cemetery. Surprisingly, this creepy cemetery is actually full of fascinating history and you won't be able to resist stopping by...in the daytime, at least.
Boasting just a few residents, Goldfield is what we consider a "living ghost town" today. Back in the day, this boomtown was actually quite bustling, so of course it has an interesting cemetery to go along with it.
In fact, this cemetery has quite the history. It was originally located in the center of town. However, as the town grew, they realized they needed to move the cemetery onto the edge of town. A group of men unearthed the graves at night and relocated the remains to the new location. How creepy!
As you peruse the cemetery, you'll spot the original headstones, complete with date of death. You may even see cause of death, as one gravestone famously attributes an unknown man's death from "eating library paste".
The creepiest part of exploring this cemetery is thinking about how the amount of dead people here probably outnumbers the living people in town. It's estimated that there are about 1,200 people buried in the city's cemetery.
As you'll see, most of the tombstones are made from crudely cut stone. It's actually amazing that they've held up over all of these years. It makes you really wonder about who these people were and what their lives were like living in one of Nevada's most populous mining towns.
There are definitely rumors out there that the Goldfield Cemetery is haunted, and you can't help but believe them when you see this place for yourself. Although full of rich and fascinating history, this is definitely the type of place you don't want to be caught in at nighttime.
