Elko, Nevada is consistently recognized as one of the last authentic Western towns in the country. Boasting a rich history and an enduring Old West vibe, the town is the perfect location for the Cowboy Arts and Gear Museum.
True to its name, the museum is dedicated to preserving Nevada's incredible cowboy history. Showcasing special exhibits, art displays, workshops, and much more, the museum is a fantastic look back at Elko's rustic beginnings.
In fact, even the museum's building is an iconic piece of Elko history. Built in 1907, the building was home to a saddle shop owned by G.S. Garcia for over 30 years. G.S. Garcia was a household name 'round these parts back then, as he was extremely notable for his intricate silver work and saddle making.
Garcia died in 1933 and his business was relocated to California by his sons, so the building was used for a variety of storefronts over the years. However, it was specifically restored back to the saddle shop's original appearance when the cowboy museum opened in January 2018.
Inside, you'll spot antique saddles and other pieces of equipment from decades past. Every piece has a story attached to it, and you can't help but wonder what happened to the cowboy that it once belonged to.
Admission to the Cowboy Arts and Gear Museum is completely free. Although, donations are definitely encouraged. In fact, donations are what help keeps the museum going by providing support for future exhibits.
If it weren't for the ranchers who traveled here in the mid-1800s, Elko simply wouldn't be the incredible place it is today. The museum focuses on the people who built this town from the ground up, and it's a destination that every Nevadan can definitely appreciate.
