The Comstock Gold Mill was built in 1864 by a man named Joshua Hendy from San Francisco. It originally operated in a mining town called Marietta, located near the town of Hawthorne.
This particular mill is a two stamp gold mill. This means it was used to process ore by crushing it (or "stamping") in order to full extract the precious silver and gold. Virginia City alone operated 236 mills in order to keep up with the Comstock's massive silver strike.
Fascinatingly enough, the Comstock Gold Mill is one of only three mills that remain around Virginia City. It even still functions! Visitors who stop by the famous mill can witness its jaw-dropping power for themselves since it's open seasonly during the months of May through October.
The mill's caretaker is the one individual in Virginia City who knows the most about this iconic stamp mill, and he'll tell you everything there is to know when you tour the property. Admission to the mill is $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 12-18, and free for kids 12 and under, but donations are always appreciated in order to keep this historic gem up and running.
