Nevada is chock full of beautiful lakes that are worth visiting. However, just a handful of them see a lot of traffic. The other lakes are blissfully underrated. That doesn’t mean that these lakes don’t have a lot to offer. In fact, that couldn’t be further from the truth. This little-known lake is an utter beauty and some might say it’s the clearest lake in all of Nevada. This is definitely one of those things you have to see in person to truly appreciate, so take a look and start planning!
Liberty Lake is a little-known treasure hiding out in the Ruby Mountains. Getting there will require a day-hike, but an overnight adventure is highly encouraged so that you can truly soak in the magnificent beauty that this lake boasts.
The trail to the lake is roughly three miles and provides some of the most breathtaking views of the Ruby Mountains and Lamoille Canyon you've ever seen. The hike isn't easy but it's manageable by most if you just take your time.
The trail prepares you for the sight of Liberty Lake by taking you past a number of small lakes such as Dollar Lakes and Lamoille Lake. Once you pass Lamoille Lake, the trail will start to steeply ascend to Liberty Lake. As the lake comes into view, you're bound to be blown away.
Surrounded by stunning peaks, it almost feels like Liberty Lake is contained in its own little bubble. It's a magical sight that pictures just don't do justice. The lake has a surface area of roughly 21 acres and you'll want to explore every bit of it.
The water has a wonderful blue-green color that looks to be crystal clear upon further inspection. The lake sits at an elevation of 10,039 feet so the water is going to be pretty cold, but it's perfect for soaking in on a blazing hot day (or maybe just dipping your toes in).
There are a handful of primitive camping spots located around the lake, particularly on the eastern side. This is a downright spectacular camping destination. Can you imagine waking up to the sight of this lake outside of your tent?
Liberty Lake may be tucked deep into the northern Nevada backcountry, but trust us—it's worth it. Take a break from exploring our state's more well-known lakes (cough, Tahoe, cough) and go out and discover Liberty Lake!
