There’s nothing quite like hitting the open road to enjoy the state of Nevada! From mountains to deserts and everything in between, the silver state entices all who cross into its borders. Many roads, both big and small, run through the state giving drivers plenty to explore. However there’s just one that covers more miles than any other. If you prefer to keep your road trip full of surprises at every turn, then look no further than U.S Route 95 in Nevada.
U.S Route 95 covers 646 miles through the state of Nevada. From the south, it connects with Las Vegas, a must-see destination for anyone traveling through the silver state!
Whether you stop by day or night, the city of Las Vegas is a true gem in the Nevada desert. Enjoy world class shows and attractions by foot on The Strip or get a bird’s eye view atop the rotating High Roller. Whatever you decide to do, just passing through might not be an option with so many wonderful and exciting sights to see in Nevada’s most popular city.
From Las Vegas, U.S Route 95 heads north along the western state border. About an hour after driving along the highway, history buffs will be in for a treat as the famous Nevada Historical Marker 165 pops out of the sand. Look for the blue sign indicating the location of a nuclear test site!
During the early 1950s, this was the location where nuclear testing was conducted under strict supervision. Within 1,350 square miles of the
historical marker sits the nation’s main nuclear explosives testing laboratory. Pull over to get a sense of just how large of an area was needed in order to conduct these massive experiments. It’ll be a sight you won’t soon forget.
Okay, we’re cheating here and veering a just a little off the road, but if you’ve got the time and want to check out a unique place, then come along for the ride! Turning left onto highway 373/127 will not only take you on a short detour into California, but the road runs parallel to U.S Route 95. The reason for this tiny detour? Why, a castle, of course!
Pull over to see the majesty that is
Scotty’s Castle . Located in Death Valley National Park, the mission revival two-story castle was once used as a wealthy prospector’s winter home. Today, visitors like you can tour the great house in the desert.
Leaving the castle (and California) behind, we rejoin U.S. Route 95 and head to one of the most famous ghost towns in all of Nevada – Gold Point. Gold Point is a ghost town that has miraculously sprung back to life! Okay, so it’s not completely back to its heyday, but with many original buildings and structures still standing, the town feels very much alive.
Gold Point’s history dates back to 1868 during the old west days of mining silver and limestone. A tent city was erected. The small settlement grew to a full-fledged town by the early 1900s, home of over 225 buildings and complete with 13 saloons catering to 1,000 residents. The last bit of mining done at the location was in the 1960s. Today, Gold Point is like a living museum. Take a look around on a self-guided tour or spend a night at the
bed and breakfast .
Next up driving north along U.S. Route 95 is the charming town of Tonopah, Nevada. While there is so much to do and see in town, one of the best things to do is staying in your car! Keep your eyes open as you drive through Tonopah and enjoy the town’s eclectic array of murals.
Visit the
town's website or Visitor’s Center to
grab your brochure , complete with information and a self-guided tour of the town’s beautiful murals. Starting from downtown, visitors can expect to find paintings and artwork depicting historical events that have taken place throughout the region over the years. It’s a fantastic way to either stay in the car or stretch your legs while learning so much about this great state.
As you leave the town of Tonopah, you’ll want to turn with U.S. Route 95 to the west as we make our way to Reno, Nevada. This city is plenty of fun and roadtrip lovers will be sure to appreciate one of its best attractions – The National Automobile Museum!
Since opening its doors in 1989, the
National Automobile Museum has amassed a whopping total of 225 vehicles! It’ll take some time to peruse each exciting exhibit at this fun museum. Find The Batmobile and the Cars of the Stars exhibits, where cars from famous movies as well as those owned by Sinatra and Elvis himself can be seen up-close.
U.S. Route 95 comes to a stop near the northern Nevada region around Lake Tahoe. It covers so many unique and interesting places in Nevada, the highway is a gem. There are even talks of expanding the highway in the near future!
Enjoy the views of western Nevada as you cruise along the state’s longest stretch of road. Covering six counties, U.S. Route 95 is the stuff dreams are made of! Come see sights unlike anywhere else in the country.
