Hiding in the Las Vegas Valley is a small but mighty animal sanctuary that you're bound to fall in love with. This beautiful sanctuary has provided a safe-space for animals since 1970, yet a lot of people don't even know it exists.
The Gilcrease Family moved to this area from Reno back in 1920. At that time, they purchased a 1,500-acre parcel of land and started to settle into a traditional ranching life. Over the years, the ranching operation continued to grow and grow. Over time, the family eventually donated and sold out parts of the land; a portion of which would become the Gilcrease Nature Sanctuary.
The sanctuary is a non-profit organization that totally relies on the support of the general public for survival. It's evident that this place isn't about profit. It's about the animals, and it shows.
You'll be delighted when you find that the sanctuary is home to a wide variety of animals including domestic and exotic species. However, the bulk of the animal population is comprised of birds. Many, many birds! You'll find species ranging from parakeets to macaws, and even a Toucan.
Plenty of farm-raised birds can be found in the sanctuary, as well. If you've never seen an ostrich, emu, or peacock up close, now is your chance. It's one thing to see these majestic birds in photographs and another to see them with your own eyes.
The sanctuary is home to plenty of non-bird species as well. You'll also spot giant tortoises, llamas, donkeys, horses, ponies, goats, and pigs. It's clear that these animals are very well cared for and are happy in their home at the sanctuary. As a result, interacting with them is a blast.
There's no set dollar amount for admission. However, donations are strongly encouraged. Volunteers are also welcome to come and help out seven days a week, from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm. The sanctuary itself is open Thursday through Monday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.
Get a closer look at the sanctuary and take advantage of a guided tour, available for a small fee Thursdays through Sunday (by appointment only). This hidden gem of an animal sanctuary is fun for the whole family and you definitely don't want to miss it.
