Not Many People Know About This One Amazing Island In Nevada

An island isn’t normally the first thing that comes to someone’s mind the moment they hear “Nevada.” Surprisingly, there are a few islands in the Silver State, including one that’s pretty amazing. This amazing island is known as “Anaho Island,” which is located in Pyramid Lake.
Here’s a little background information on Pyramid Lake:
Pyramid Lake, located in Washoe County, is a remnant of ancient Lake Lahontan. This historic lake was first inhabited by the 19th-century Pauite, and it covered most of the northwestern part of Nevada by the end of the Ice Age. At an estimated 890 feet, Pyramid Lake was the deepest area in Lake Lahontan. Pyramid Lake’s name, which was given by John C. Fremont in 1844, was inspired by the pyramid-shaped island that’s located off the east shore (pictured below).
Located approximately 35 miles northeast of Reno is the Pyramid Lake Indian Reservation (pictured below), which was created in 1859 and is governed by the Paiute tribe. According to certain sources, several residents of the reservation are descendants of Chief Winnemucca. Chief Winnemucca was a very important chief of the Northern Paiute during the Paiute War of 1860.
And now for some information regarding Anaho Island:
Anaho Island is a rocky island that’s approximately one mile long, covering nearly 635 acres. This amazing island is protected by the Anaho Island National Wildlife Refuge, which was established in 1913 by President Woodrow Wilson. No humans reside on the island and access to it is restricted. Boats aren’t even allowed within 1,000 feet of the shoreline. Today, the refuge remains one of the largest white pelican nesting colonies in the united states.
