There is an abundance of things that make a good hike, such as stunning views, an easy-to-navigate trail, plenty of shade, etc. Perhaps the best thing that can make for a memorable hike is a little bit of cultural history to go along with it! This wonderful trail offers a little bit of everything just mentioned, and then some. Not only will you be immersed in some of Nevada’s finest natural beauty, but you’ll be led straight to an old abandoned mine as well. Whether you’re looking for a bit of exercise or you just have a fascination for abandoned destinations, this hike should definitely be on your radar.
For a hike that offers a little bit of everything, check out the Stanley B Springs Trail in the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area. Located on the north side of Kyle Canyon, this 2.4-mile trail boasts tons of amazing scenery and even a little bit of history.
The trailhead is easy to find. It's located along the side of the highway on Kyle Canyon Road. You'll have to walk on the shoulder of the road for a few hundred feet before arriving at the dirt trail that continues up the hillside.
Once on the trail, you'll immediately find yourself immersed by thick groves of pine trees and woodland habitat. It's a bird watcher's paradise, and the area provides plenty of shade.
After a while, the trail will start to veer north and lead you into Stanley B Canyon. As the trail climbs, you'll witness some awe-inspiring, wide open views of the canyon. The sights are positively spectacular.
The trail will then descend back into the canyon, where you'll come across a small natural spring. This area is a great place to stop and relax while listening to the trickling of water and basking in the shade.
You'll come across the abandoned mine shaft near the end of the trail. A mining claim sign nearby states that it belongs to "Leroy Mining Claim", and you can't help but wonder what the story behind this old shaft is. It's been barred off for safety, but you still peek in and get a look (just watch out for bats.)
If you continue along the trail, you'll notice two more caves that have been turned into mines. These ones aren't barred off but still be sure to stay safe and keep your distance.
Once at the end of the trail, simply turn around and retrace your steps to make your way back to the trailhead. This wonderful hike is perfect for scoping out one of Kyle Canyon's lesser-known areas and it's a must for any adventurer!
