While many “foreigners” think gambling when they hear “Nevada,” the fact remains that there are so many other rewarding activities in the Silver State that have nothing to do with gambling. From hiking to skiing to rock climbing to exploring ghost towns to visiting museums and beyond, there is certainly no lack of rewarding activities that have nothing to do with gambling. Here are nine of them:
1. Tour the historic Hoover Dam in Boulder City.
Take an informative one-hour guided tour through the modern engineering marvel that is the Hoover Dam while learning about its construction. Explore lesser known areas of the dam and the power plant. If you've never done this, you must.
2. Enter another world in Great Basin National Park's Lehman Caves in Baker.
Take a guided tour by park rangers who will explain the geology, history, and ecology of the caves. Choose between the Lodge Room and Grand Palace tours. Both are utterly amazing. Of course, Great Basin National Park is full of other incredible activities and attractions.
3. Satisfy your photography craving at Lake Tahoe.
Sand Harbor, near Incline Village, is one of the most photographed places in the state, as well as one of the most beautiful. So much so, that private photography tours are available. Make your own tour and capture some stunning pictures of the lake, the gorgeous mountains, and world-famous
Bonsai Rock.
4. Explore the haunted ghost town of Goldfield.
Perhaps the most haunted of all Nevada ghost towns,
Goldfield's rich mining history and troubled past adds to its creepiness. While you're there, be sure to take a side trip to the impressive and interesting
car forest. They are both well worth your time.
5. Learn about Carson City's rich history and perhaps see a ghost or two.
The Carson City ghost walk is a highly informative evening stroll through the capital's downtown west side. Led by Madame Curry (a fictional character named for Carson City's founder, Abe Curry's wife), you will be intrigued by stories about the city's Victorian history and paranormal legends. This is a truly fun tour.
6. Get a different perspective of gold country from the Virginia & Truckee Railroad.
The
V & T Railroad offers three different adventures through Virginia City, Carson City, and Gold Hill. Learn about the incredible mining history of the area and you may even see some of Nevada's beautiful wild horses.
7. Explore Nevada's oldest state park and one of the most beautiful places in the entire state at the Valley of Fire near Overton.
This incredible 46,000-acre national park is chock-full of red Aztec sandstone formations which give the park its fire connotation, ancient petroglyphs, and a variety of hiking trails that provide stunning views of this amazing area.
8. Bowl a few frames at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno.
Enjoy this 78-lane, nationally acclaimed bowling center that attracts professionals and casual bowlers from around the world.
9. Revisit your childhood at the Pinball Hall of Fame in Las Vegas.
Travel back in time to your childhood at this 10,000-square-foot
arcade of sorts that contains over 200 pinball and video game machines. For $10 in quarters, you can spend a fun few hours reminiscing and being entertained.
