Festivals are no stranger to Nevada and we have some fantastic ones that occur in the winter months. From celebrating the Christmas holidays, to the health of our beloved seniors, to the importance of Asian culture to the history of Nevada, we have a wide variety of festivals to choose from!
1. WinterFest, Reno
WinterFest runs the entire month of December through New Year's Day. It's the biggest holiday and family oriented event in Reno.
The festival takes place at the Greater Nevada Field stadium ice skating rink. Activities include ice skating, a Christmas trees lot, pictures with Santa, and the Holiday Express Train inside of the stadium.
2. Christmas on the Comstock, Virginia City
Christmas on the Comstock is another holiday-themed winter festival.
During the month of December, the entire town of Virginia City is lit up with holiday lights and decorations. There are many different activities including holiday bazaars, a nighttime parade, a saloon crawl, concerts, photos with Santa, holiday socials and the V&T Candy Cane Express train ride.
3. White Pine Fire and Ice Show, Ely
The White Pine Fire and Ice Show is a snow and ice sculpture competition that takes place in mid-January each year. The event takes place at Cave Lake State Park.
Artists compete for monetary prizes for the best ice sculpture they can create on the lake. The "fire" part of the festival is a fireworks display that same weekend.
4. Chinese New Year in the Desert
The Chinese New Year in the Desert takes place in January. The new year is the most important holiday for the Chinese. The new year festival is called the "Spring Festival" in China, "Tet New Year" in Vietnam and "Seol-lal" in Korea.
The festival is held in several locations around Las Vegas. The event is so large that Las Vegas has been named one of the 8 top places to celebrate Chinese New Year in the U.S. The festival includes a parade and many cultural dance and arts demonstrations, concerts, and dining events. Several Asian cultures are included in the festival.
5. Reno/Tahoe Senior Winter Games, Reno & Tahoe
The Reno/Tahoe Senior Winter Games is a fun 2 week long event encouraging active seniors to participate in sports for medals.
There is a summer games as well, mirroring the set up of the Olympics. During the winter games, seniors compete in events such as archery, bowling, cross country skiing and snowshoeing, ice skating, skiing, tennis, and more!
6. Lunar New Year Festival, Reno
The Chinese Association of Northern Nevada hosts a big new year's celebration in Reno.
The festival promotes Chinese culture and has dining events, traditional Chinese Lion & Dragon dancing and Kung Fu exhibits, and additional events that are open to all Reno residents.
