Rock climbing has emerged as quite the hobby across the country; however, it has really taken off in Nevada, particularly in Red Rock Canyon, located just 20 miles west of Las Vegas. Red Rock has become quite synonymous with rock climbing in Nevada due to the vast number of routes and the beauty of the area. However, in addition to Red Rock, Nevada has several other breathtaking and inspiring places to climb. Take a look.
1. Red Rock Canyon, Las Vegas
Located just 20 miles west of Las Vegas, Red Rock Canyon is a rock climber's dream and chock full of jaw-dropping, awe-inspiring climbs. Whether one is a novice or experienced climber, Red Rock Canyon is the place to learn to climb, advance skills, climb a long multi-pitch route, or combine them all for a fabulous (and tiring) day.
Red Rock Canyon is among the preeminent rock climbing destinations in the U.S. This climbing route is lovingly called "Cannibal Crag."
This climb is known as "Crude Behavior."
2. Lamoille Canyon, Ruby Mountains, Elko
Called "The Yosemite of Nevada," Lamoille Canyon, located in the Ruby Mountains in northern Nevada, has a variety of rock climbing routes for the novice and the expert. During the winter, ice climbing is quite popular here.
3. Mount Charleston, Spring Mountains, Las Vegas
One of the preeminent hard limestone climbing destinations, Mount Charleston is known for its beauty, overhanging caves, and relatively close proximity to Las Vegas without the latter's heat.
Mount Charleston has more than 180 different climbing routes for beginners and the more advanced (pictured).
4. Eagle Creek Canyon, Lake Tahoe
A climb up the "Unknown Chimney" is, indeed, a challenge but oh so worth it. Look at that view.
This challenging wall in Eagle Creek Canyon is known as "Space Walk."
5. Donner Summit, Lake Tahoe
Donner Summit offers both sport and more traditional climbs. They vary from slabs to cracks to faces to radical overhangs.
A stunning view of the challenging climbs near Donner Summit.
6. Big Chief, Lake Tahoe
Big Chief has some amazing short and well bolted sport climbs, although they are somewhat difficult to find, but when you do, the views are truly awe-inspiring.
The Big Chief area is best known for its collection of sport bolted volcanic crags with new lines and climbs added quite regularly
