If you’re from Nevada — or have lived here for quite a while — there are some unwritten rules that simply go without saying. Whereas Marylanders know to put Old Bay on everything, Floridians know to stay away from gators, and everyone in a southern state knows there’s only one way to make iced tea, here in Nevada, we have our own set of unwritten rules. Here are 16 of them.
1. If you can, climb it.
Nevada has more mountain ranges than any other state. Thus, there is much climbing going on.
2. If you build it, they will come.
And come, and come, and come, and sometimes never leave.
3. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.
With around-the-clock alcohol sales, most Nevadans know their limit.
4. There's absolutely no reason to be hungry.
With the multitude of all-you-can-eat buffets (and that most of them are 24 hours), you should never, ever be hungry.
5. Park in the shade whenever possible, especially in the summer.
Unlike my mother, most people don't enjoy sitting in a 150-degree vehicle that's been in the sun all day.
6. Relatedly, keep these in your car.
I mean, unless you'd like to have a Honda emblem emblazoned on your palm from said 150-degree vehicle interior.
7. If it's sports-related, you can bet on it.
Don't believe me? Go visit a sports book.
8. Enjoy the rain.
Since Nevada gets, on average, about 12 inches of rain per YEAR , when it rains, take a moment and appreciate it. Especially those times when it dries before it even hits the ground.
9. Be courteous to other drivers.
Even though most Nevadans are horrible drivers (and let's not even discuss tourists), since ramming your vehicle into another is frowned upon, just be nice.
10. Love golf.
Or at least learn to tolerate it. Nevada is chock full of golf courses. And retired people who play it.
11. Bowling, too.
We don't have the Taj Mahal of Bowling for nothing.
12. If you want to decorate your house/apartment/condo/dorm, use a sun.
Because we certainly don't have enough of that here. Seriously, though, I have four of these.
13. We love every season.
Nevada is much, much more than Las Vegas pools and southern Nevada hiking, and we enjoy our entire state and the seasons that come with it.
14. Air conditioning isn't a luxury.
Trust me. You NEED it when it's 120 degrees outside for two solid months.
15. Respect your elders.
They're everywhere. Especially in the grocery store and casino buffets.
16. Nevada is the most beautiful state.
We all know it is.
