Who doesn’t love a road trip? With gas prices higher than we would like, road trips can get to be expensive. Never fear! Here are ten fun and free (or inexpensive) road trip destinations you will love.
1. Goldwell Open Air Museum, Rhyolite
This 7.8-acre outdoor art exhibit is the brain child of the late Polish-Belgian artist Albert Szukalski. These "ghosts" are arranged in a variety of ways and are quite impressive. Admission to the exhibit is free. Oh, and while you're here, check out the ghost town of
Rhyolite. That's pretty nifty too.
2. International Car Forest of the Last Church, Goldfield
This
unique attraction makes for a fun and interesting day trip, and admission is free. You can also visit the creepy nearby ghost town of
Goldfield.
3. Lake Tahoe
There are so many free activities at this highest alpine lake. Hiking and bicycling are extremely popular, in particular this gorgeous
hike that is even more spectacular in the autumn.
4. Valley of Fire, Overton
Located midway between Las Vegas and Mesquite and so named for its brilliant red rocks, the Valley of Fire should not be missed. For a $10 day pass, you can explore the majestic rock formations and canyons, marvel over the stunning colors, and take a few interesting
hikes.
5. Austin
6. Catch a glimpse of Nevada's wild horses
There are several
places across the state where you can glimpse these gorgeous creatures. Pack a picnic lunch, take a camera, and have fun!
7. Grimes Point, Fallon
Take a hike (in a good way) and check out the historic, intriguing, and interesting petroglyphs that adorn many of the rocks. While you're here, visit the Hidden Cave.
8. Lunar Crater National Natural Landmark, Nye County
Created more than two million years ago, this 400-square-acre crater is the result of a series of volcanic eruptions that also created lava fields, cinder cones, ash piles, and fissures. The crater was used as a training ground for Apollo astronauts in the 1960's.
9. Sand Mountain Recreation Area, Fallon
Play in the sand, listen to the unique humming sounds, and enjoy some off-road fun. While there are fees to use the area, Tuesdays and Wednesdays are free.
10. Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Boulder City
Picnic at the largest man-made reservoir in the U.S., partake of the myriad types of water activities, or visit the impressive Hoover Dam. There is a $20 entry fee to the park, but it is well worth it. If you want to see the dam up close and personally, there are several Hoover Dam tour options which start at $15. Again, this tour is well worth the nominal price.
