Every state has its share of ghost stories and spooky sites, and Nevada is no different. From haunted hotels to cemeteries to parks, the Silver State has its share of haunted history. Check out these 10 places with intriguing ghost stories and documented paranormal activity.
1. Silver Queen Hotel - Virginia City
Built in 1876, the Silver Queen is allegedly haunted by a prostitute named Rosie who reportedly committed suicide on the premises by slashing her wrists in Room 11's bathtub. She now purportedly wanders the hotel, knocking on doors. Room 13 is also supposedly haunted where guests have heard doorknobs shaking and footsteps.
2. Yellow Jacket Mine - Virginia City
A fire in the mine in 1869 trapped and killed 35 miners. Not all of the victims' remains were found, and it is reported that as many as 11 of them stayed behind to haunt the miners' cabin.
3. Nevada Hotel - Battle Mountain
Now a converted bar and casino, reports of paranormal activity abound. Strange noises and random cold spots have been reported on the top floor and, in some cases, items have simply disappeared.
4. Grimes Point - Fallon
Grimes Point is one of the largest petroglyph sites in the western US. Its ghosts include various glowing apparitions walking around the mining area, loop trail, and cave tour on moonless nights.
5. Virginia City Cemetery - Virginia City
Many paranormal experiences have been reported in the cemetery. From the apparition of a young girl standing beside some of the gravesites to a man clad in a suit and hat wandering around. There is also a gravestone that glows from a distance but "goes out" when people approach. Perhaps the most unusual phenomenon is the rather heavy gravestone of a deceased male that allegedly moves by itself, forcing groundskeepers to repeatedly put it back where it belongs.
6. Foxridge Park - Henderson
This park is allegedly haunted by the ghost of a young boy who was the victim of a drunk driver. Rumor has it that he swings on the playground every night after midnight, but if someone gets too close he turns into a demon and disappears. There have also been reports of shadowy figures walking along the sidewalk in the back of the park.
7. Robb Canyon - Reno
During the 1970's, the remains of four mutilated bodies (three males, one female) were found in the canyon avenging their murders and possibly providing clues to the now-cold case. Many believe their spirits are haunting the area. Locals report hearing screams, seeing shadowy figures in the canyon, seeing and hearing spirits of children at the nearby playground, being pushed, having object thrown at them, and being held down.
8. Naval Air Station (NAS) - Fallon
Among the places reported to be haunted on this military base include the third deck of Barracks 3 where strange noises are heard emanating from a room where a soldier allegedly committed suicide and the television in the lodge reportedly turns on by itself. The second floor is allegedly haunted by a pilot who was killed during a training flight. Also, in Tahoe House, occupants have reported a strong, inexplainable floral scent.
9. The Dake House - Genoa
Built in 1872 and now an antique store, Dake House was once the local undertaker's house. There are many reports of visitors glimpsing an old woman in a housecoat wandering the premises at night. Others have reported being hit and slapped and witnessing paintings being flung from the walls where they were hung.
10. Bonnie Springs Ranch - Las Vegas
This western-themed amusement park is one of many haunted locales in Las Vegas. Among the paranormal phenomena include the figure of a little girl in the schoolhouse, wax figures in the museum moving by themselves, a merry-go-round that works on its own, and several shadowy figures roaming about the opera house. The owners offer a haunted ghost tour each month and transform the ranch into something even scarier for Halloween.
