When it comes to unique and surprising attractions, Nebraska has a whole lot to offer. This remarkable little town was made to look like it stepped right out of the early 20th century, and it’s a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.
Up near the northeastern corner of Nebraska is the teeny-tiny village of Winnetoon, population 68. Its original claim to fame is its status as the world's only town with this unique name.
But there's something else very special about this off-the-beaten-path destination: the historic village and shopping center known as Winnetoon Mall & Post Office.
The idea to revitalize old buildings and remake them into something new and wonderful was envisioned by Winnetoon resident Gayle Neuhaus. She wanted a way to put her beloved little town on the map, so in the late 1990s she and the late Joe Serres set to work building a village that looked like it was right out of the early 20th century.
Thus, the Winnetoon 1910 Boardwalk was born. It became a historical attraction for those who wanted to learn a little more about the history of this part of Nebraska.
The Winnetoon Mall & Post Office isn't a "mall" in the way you might be picturing, but it does offer a wonderfully eclectic selection of goods for purchase.
Handcrafted soaps, Amish baskets and rugs, clothing, books about local history, handmade carvings, and more are available. Support area craftspeople by taking home some of these unique items.
The Winnetoon Mall & Post Office is an especially beloved destination for its large selection of antiques. You never can tell what you'll find when you visit.
There are lovingly restored steamer trunks, gorgeous antique glass items, costume jewelry, and even antique furniture - and tons more. Clear out some space in the trunk before you visit because you're sure to find some treasures you just can't live without!
And if you're lucky enough to visit when there are Amish baked goods available, be sure to grab some. Nothing compares to the heavenly donuts - they're soft, pillowy, perfectly glazed, and miles better than anything you'll find at the grocery store.
But don't get so caught up in shopping that you forget to visit all of the little village's charming spots. The Privy Path is an especially fun place to wander.
Even if you're not interested in shopping, you can arrange a tour to see and learn about this unique destination and the history of the surrounding area. It's one of those true Nebraska experiences that you won't find anywhere else.
