When you think of the Victorian era, you probably picture England rather than Nebraska. But the culture and style of the time reached all the way over here, and today there’s a wonderfully preserved Victorian-era home where you can experience it.
Wildwood Historic Center in Nebraska City is based in a beautiful Gothic revival-style home built in 1869. The 10-room building was once home to the Ware family. Jasper and Ellen Ware - and later, their descendants - lived here for many decades.
The home and land were purchased by Nebraska City after the last of the Ware family passed away. The community restored the buildings and grounds to their original Victorian splendor and opened them up to the public for tours.
Today, docents in period attire lead visitors through the home, showing off the many authentic furniture pieces and other objects. Some were donated, but many were actually owned by the Ware family themselves.
One of the loveliest parts of Wildwood Historic Center is the stunning Victorian garden. This lush oasis is a peaceful escape from the outside world where you can wander to your heart's content.
Events and holiday celebrations are held here throughout the year. You can even rent out the space for your own special event. What a stunning backdrop for your wedding, party, or other gathering.
Wildwood Historic Center is open 7 days a week from Arbor Day to Halloween every year, and weekends in November. Admission to the house is $5 for adults, $2 for kids 12 and under, and free for those who reside in the 68410 zip code. Check out its website or Facebook page to keep up on news and read more about this unique location.
