Now’s the time to get out in the fresh, Nebraska air and enjoy some of our most beautiful scenery! If you’re new to hiking, the Wehrspann Lake Full Loop Trail in the Chalco Hills Recreation Area is the perfect place to start.
The Chalco Hills Recreation Area spans 1,196 acres on the outskirts of Omaha. Its main feature is Wehrspann Lake, which is popular reservoir for fishing and recreation.
Outdoor enthusiasts of all skill levels will love the six-mile-long trail that circles the lake. It's paved all the way around, and has an elevation change of just 282 feet, so it's easily accessible for strollers and wheelchairs.
You don't need to be outfitted with the latest hiking gear to complete this loop trail. Just wear a pair of comfortable shoes, some sunscreen, and a hat. Bring along a water bottle; you'll find water spigots along the trail to refill it.
The trail has both shady and sun-exposed spots, and it's a very pleasant journey. Keep in mind that many people use this trail for jogging and cycling, so stay to the right to allow them to pass.
You'll find plenty of photogenic subjects, including grasslands, rural vistas, and wildflowers. Watch for wildlife, too. You might see whitetail deer, rabbits, and plenty of birds along the way.
There are several benches along the trail, so take your time to sit and enjoy the scenery. Many visitors to this trail bring along a picnic lunch or snack to enjoy.
