If you’ve ever thought the world has run out of holiday spirit, you might want to visit the tiny town of Comstock, Nebraska. The holiday spirit is alive and well there, and it’s growing every year thanks to one man who got in over his head. When Henry Nuxoll began decorating his home for Christmas in 2014, he had no idea what he was getting into.
There are fewer than 100 people residing in Comstock, and there's not much to see there most of the year. But around Thanksgiving, Comstock begins to transform into one of the most delightful little Christmas cities you've ever seen.
That's when Henry Nuxoll begins the long task of setting up the holiday display that takes over the entire town. He started with just his home, and only to impress his late twin brother and his granddaughter.
But someone got wind of Henry's holiday decorating and dropped off some Christmas inflatables - anonymously, so the story goes - with a note saying "Hope you can use these." The next day, more inflatable decorations arrived.
More anonymous gifts of new inflatables kept arriving for the next 30 days until Nuxoll - and Comstock - had more than $3,000 worth of donated decorations. And when you have all those Christmas decorations, what else are you going to do with them but put them out for everyone to enjoy?
Every year since that one fateful Christmas, Henry Nuxoll has overseen the dozen or so volunteers who help set up and take down the decorations at the beginning and end of the season.
Henry paid the large electricity bill for the display on his own at first, but the town now raises funds to help cover that cost.
The display now includes more than 300 inflatable decorations, an assortment of backdrops, more than 100 wreaths, a stocking for every Comstock resident, and more.
But according to Henry Nuxoll, none of this was his idea – he just happened to be the guy on the receiving end of all of those decorations. Watch this good-natured country boy tell the story of his town’s remarkable display in the video below.
If you’d like to get in on this holiday joy, head to Comstock between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. It will take you about an hour to walk through the whole 17-block display, or you can drive through instead. Whether you see the display on foot or from a moving car, there’s no denying the magic that it brings to this tiny Nebraska town.
If you’re up for a drive after seeing Comstock’s Christmas City, you can always head about 90 minutes south to visit Minden, the place known as “Nebraska’s Christmas City.”
