Nebraskans have a lot to brag about, but we tend to be pretty humble people. You won’t catch us boasting very often unless we have a really, really good reason. Next time you feel like bragging about Nebraska, here are a few key points to bring up.
1. We feed the country.
The crops and livestock that come out of our state help to keep the country running smoothly. That's a pretty great thing to have pride in.
2. We have the second-lowest unemployment rate in the nation.
Last year, we had the lowest. We'll get back there again. If you want to work in Nebraska, there's work to be found.
3. We gave the world Kool-Aid.
Where would summers be without this sweet, colorful, refreshing beverage? Kool-Aid was born right here - in Hastings, to be exact.
4. ...And the reuben sandwich.
Another tasty treat that was dreamed up by a Nebraskan. (In fact, Nebraskans have invented a ton of great stuff.
See more here. )
5. Half a million sandhill cranes choose to vacation here every spring.
Ok, it's not so much a vacation as it is a stopover during their migration. Still, 80 percent of the world's sandhill cranes stop by here every year. It's one of the most spectacular wildlife displays in the country, and it only happens here.
6. We have the best zoo ever.
The Henry Doorly Zoo has been named the best in the country by some publications and best in the world by others...but we all know it's the best in the galaxy.
7. Our state history is packed with fascinating stories.
From the pioneers who settled here to the brave souls traveling on the California, Mormon, and Oregon trails, Nebraska has played a huge role in countless lives.
8. But our history goes way further back than humans.
Millions of years ago, Nebraska naturally looked very different. Many now-extinct species walked these plains, and more recently humans have been digging up and studying their bones. Nebraska has amazing fossil sites, including a portion of the
Fossil Freeway.
9. Our museums really can't be beat.
It kind of seems like we have a museum for everything. From art to pioneer history to telephones and pedal cars, Nebraska is packed with unique museums.
10. We have this college football team...
Maybe you've heard of them? They're kind of a big deal around here.
11. We have more miles of river than any other state.
Minnesota can keep its 10,000 lakes. We have miles upon miles upon miles of river...and a river is the perfect place to spend a summer afternoon.
12. Our people are some of the friendliest you'll meet.
Fancy a conversation with a complete stranger? We'll be happy to oblige. In fact, we'll engage you in conversation even if you don't really feel like it. That's how unfailingly friendly we are.
13. We've given the world some awesome famous people.
Johnny Carson is just one of them - there are way too many to name here. Just trust: it's a whole lot.
14. Our winery game is on point.
Who would have thought that Nebraska soil would be so perfect for growing wine grapes and other fruits that make incredible wines? We've got LOTS of wineries to wet your whistle at - and then take home a bottle or two for later. (Pictured: Soaring Wings Winery in Springfield.)
15. Our state parks are the absolute best.
It feels like there are hundreds of them. There probably aren't quite THAT many, but wherever you are in Nebraska, you're never far from a fantastic state park.
16. We have the only unicameral legislature in the nation.
I actually don't know why you would ever want to brag about this, but it's a pretty cool thing about Nebraska.
