8 Terrifying Things In Nebraska That Can (And Just Might) Kill You

Nebraska is an exceptionally beautiful state, and for the most part it’s a very safe place to live. But like anywhere, there are some dangers to living in our lovely state. These eight things, in no particular order, are perfectly capable of causing our demise.

Every time the temperature climbs very high or drops very low in Nebraska, certain people are at risk of dying. Not surprisingly, it's typically those who lack proper housing and climate control.

We have a lot of roads, and a lot of towns where going out to the bar every weekend is a standing engagement. In Franklin county, every single vehicle death in 2014 was alcohol-related. If that's not a wake-up call telling you to choose a designated driver, we don't know what is.

Of 175 traffic fatalities in Nebraska in 2013, just 30% of the victims were wearing their seat belts. Something as simple as clicking your seat belt whenever you're in a moving car is an easy and effective way to increase your personal safety.

Aw, how could poor, sweet Bambi ever hurt you? They are adorable, but they also have a bad habit of running into the road right in front of cars. In 2014, there were 2,014 deer-involved accidents in the state. Most resulted in only property damage, but there's always the chance that you could be seriously injured or killed...especially if you aren't wearing a seat belt.

Nebraska is home to four different types of rattlers. This prairie rattlesnake is a relatively safe fellow - its bite will hurt a lot but will rarely result in death. Still, take care when you're in areas they frequent. Even if you survive a bite, the whole experience will be very, very unpleasant.

Your chances of actually dying in a tornado are slim, but they're there. You'll raise your risk if you don't take adequate shelter when there's a storm coming.

Luckily, the number of farm equipment-related deaths is small in relation to the number of farmers and ranchers in Nebraska. But always take extra precautions to ensure you're safe when using those big, dangerous machines or entering grain bins.

Okay, not fried food on its own - heart disease is the real killer here. And it's a big one; heart disease is the second leading cause of death in Nebraska right behind cancer. A funnel cake now and then won't kill you (probably), but your heart will thank you if you limit the fried food, don't smoke, and get regular exercise.
