You can find the greatest things in small town Nebraska. There are little treasures tucked away in every corner of the state, from sweet little parks to one-of-a-kind museums to fabulous restaurants.
One little town in Howard County takes the cake - or should that be pie? - when it comes to delicious pizza. Dannebrog is known for the Danish Bakery, where once a week you can take home a hot circle straight from heaven.

The cute little bakery is open all week and serves delectable pastries - the kolaches are a particular highlight of the menu. The dining room is small with wood paneling on the walls and a handful of tables where you'll find locals sitting and shooting the breeze.
Just once a week, the kitchen turns into the area's most popular pizzeria. Thursday evenings are the only time you can score a gigantic pizza from this tiny bakery. You've got to call ahead if you hope to get one quickly. Otherwise, you'll wait upwards of an hour.
It is absolutely worth the wait. This is no typical pizza; it's the kind of deep dish, cheese-smothered, savory goodness that you don't usually find in small-town Nebraska...or anywhere in Nebraska, really. If you can't get a table in the little dining room, you can take your pizza to the tavern next door.
People say that every piece is so loaded with toppings and cheese that it's almost too heavy to lift. That's a funny exaggeration, of course, but not by much. A large pie weighs more than five pounds. One piece is enough to fill up most people; you might be able to finish two if you're famished.
One of the best parts of this adorable little place is the personable owners. Tom is likely to pull out his guitar and start serenading the room. At other times he’ll just pull up a chair and join the conversation.
Make a reservation early in the day on Thursday if you want a place to sit while you eat. You can reach the bakery at (308) 226-2208. It’s located at 114 Mill St S, Dannebrog, NE 68831.
